Cabinet Painting

Cabinet Painting

1. Choose the Right Paint

First step in cabinet painting is choosing the right paint for the job. Some factors that will affect the type of paint you use include:

Type of cabinet:
  • Wood cabinets are ideal for painting
  • Laminate cabinets must be in good condition and require special bonding primer
Color:
  • To match an existing color you can use an old can of paint for reference or take a chip of paint to a paint specialist.
  • To choose a new color you should coordinate with your existing palette.
  • If you need help choosing the right color for your cabinets, Salas & Sons offers color consultation services.
Sheen:

Flat: A flat sheen has a smooth matte finish. It’s the hardest to clean.

Semi-Gloss: Semi-gloss finishes have a noticeable shine. Semi-gloss will highlight imperfections, but it’s easy to clean. Typically used for kitchens.

Gloss: A gloss finish is best for baseboards, doors and trims. It’s shiny, tough and durable and can withstand a lot of wear and tear.

Acrylic paint is often the best choice for kitchen cabinets as it is breathable, water-resistant and easy to clean.

2. Protect the Area and Prep the Cabinets

Once you’ve selected the perfect high quality paint for your kitchen cabinets, Salas and Sons painters will begin prepping to paint your kitchen cabinets. We will:

Assess your cabinet’s condition: Depending on the condition of the existing paint it may need to be stripped to prepare for the new coat.

Remove hardware and doors: We’ll carefully disassemble all knobs, latches, and handles storing them safely for reassembly.

Protect the area: We cover countertops, appliances, and flooring; and apply painters tape where necessary.

Prepare surfaces:

  • Clean all the surfaces to remove dirt, grit, and grease.
  • Repair dents and holes.
  • If you’re replacing your hardware, we’ll use wood filler for holes that don’t line up with the new hardware.
  • Sand the cabinets to help paint stick to the surface.
  • Remove all dust from the area using a tack cloth and vacuum.
